Cronenberg to film a new version of “The Fly”: the director’s comment

Mr. David Cronenberg is touring around Estoril Film Festival, and during a press conference he stated that he was invited to write another version of his classic remake “The Fly“. As it is known, the movie is a remake of the 1958’s book adaptation with the same title, and it is also one of the most incredible and well known movies of the Canadian master. These rumors about a new re-re-remake have been circulating around and it was time for an insight from the director himself.
As it is, Fox approached Cronenberg about a remake, and he stated that he was not that interested in doing a remake, but if he could transform it into something different, based on the original idea, and keep it as “The Fly“, it would be “just perverse enough to be interesting to me“, as he said. And we all know what that means to the master.
However, there is no confirmation if the author will be directing the movie or not, it all sounds too much hype for a rather stylistic director to embrace, but we can expect more news soon.
Cronenberg is also looking for investment on his new project, Cosmopolis, also a book adaptation of Don DeLillo’s modern novel. The director stated that he had never written a script in six days, so this must be the real bomb. Specially when considering where the idea came from. Portugal’s producer superstar Paulo Branco (he could have been a character in one of the canadian master’s movies) gave him the book and talked about an adaptation. Odd enough, but great indeed.
We need a new Cronenberg. The last movie he directed, Eastern Promises, was more than brilliant. This is a movie director that never fails, in fact, he keeps getting more godlike these days. Can’t wait.
On another note, the above mentioned Estoril Film Festival, held in Estoril, Portugal, screens most of the director’s major movies, including some shorts and other curiosities.
This is such good timing, as a Hearbreak Motel review of Cronenberg’s version of “The Fly” is on its way, so stay tuned!
